Leland Fellow

Aubrey Bauck

9th Class, 2017-2019

Aubrey was based in Liberia before becoming a Leland Fellow, where she worked for Samaritan’s Purse as a Health and Nutrition Program Manager. In collaboration with the government and UNICEF, she managed one program providing malnutrition prevention and treatment services across several counties, and one program focused on increasing access to primary health care in the hardest to reach areas of Liberia. Prior to moving to Liberia, Aubrey completed a Master’s of Science in Public Health with a focus on nutrition from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She then worked for Johns Hopkins managing dietary data and analysis for the MAL-ED study, an 8-country cohort study led by the Foundation for the NIH and Fogarty International Center. Her research while with MAL-ED focused on local food pathways for nutrient adequacy among children in the Tanzanian cohort. Aubrey went to Wheaton College for her undergraduate degree, where she studied public health. She grew up in Manila, Philippines, where her parents still live.

Host Organization: Helen Keller International

First Year Placement
Based in Hanoi, Vietnam, Aubrey worked with Helen Keller International (HKI) to conduct social inclusion research embedded in HKI’s signature Enhanced Homestead Food Production (EHFP) program, which was being scaled up in two provinces in northern Vietnam. Aubrey supported the implementation of a baseline survey for the new EHFP program and analyzed the resulting data to identify characteristics of social exclusion that affect program outcomes. Based on these findings, she designed and conducted qualitative research to fill in knowledge gaps in the story of social exclusion in the communes where the program is running, with the goal of informing future research questions and providing guidance for social inclusion efforts in future programming.

Second Year Placement
Aubrey was based in Dakar, Senegal, in Helen Keller International’s (HKI) Africa Regional Office. HKI had recently released a new policy on gender equity and social inclusion (GESI), and Aubrey was focused on supporting the roll out of this policy across HKI’s work in Africa. Her two major tasks were to write the GESI strategy for the African region and to produce a toolkit for offices to use in integrating GESI across their operations and programs. Within these workstreams, she coordinated input from offices across the region, drafting and helping to finalize the strategy, and working with the regional Asia team to collect, generate, and refine tools for a global GESI toolkit. She also supported specific GESI projects as needed.
