Support the Hunger Center for #GivingTuesdayNow

Updates

#GivingTuesdayNow is a new global day of giving and unity in response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. Despite challenges brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, we are continuing our training and leadership development work with our current classes of Hunger Fellows, and are preparing to welcome new cohorts of Zero Hunger Interns and Emerson Fellows in the summer and fall. We are dedicated to fighting hunger by developing leaders. Your support now—in any amount—makes a real difference.

Focused on Our Mission

Since March, our staff has been working hard to deliver and expand upon our leadership development programming. Our Leland Fellows’ mid-year retreat in Nairobi, Kenya—originally an in-person gathering scheduled for the end of March—was moved to an online forum, and featured virtual sessions with subject experts live from Kenya to discuss food insecurity in a country-specific context. Our Emerson Fellows, operating remotely, are continuing to work with their policy placements, providing added capacity to their organizations’ responses to the pandemic. At a time when summer internships are being scaled back or canceled for many organizations, the Zero Hunger Internship is finalizing selections for its incoming cohort and adapting the program to the realities of social distancing. And this April we launched our online #EndHungerin30 Challenge, engaging over 700 people with our in-depth anti-hunger advocacy curriculum.

Challenges Ahead

While we’ve adapted to many of the challenges of remote operations, some of our adaptations have come with increased costs or lost opportunities, including:

  • Costs associated with canceling in-person trainings
  • Postponement of the 2020 Hunger Leadership Awards, our primary annual fundraising event
  • Costs associated with evacuation of Leland Fellows
  • Increase in stipends for Leland Fellows who have unexpectedly been forced to return to the U.S., to reflect the increase in cost-of-living expenses relative to their placement locations

We are committed to training new generations of leaders in the movement to end hunger in the U.S. and around the world. In a time of ever-increasing need and spiraling economic uncertainty, the need for compassionate and dedicated leadership is clearer than ever. Please consider showing your support for our mission with a financial contribution, in any amount, for #GivingTuesdayNow.
