The 23rd Class of Emerson Hunger Fellows at their Commencement

In July the Congressional Hunger Center celebrated the Commencement of the 23rd Class of Emerson National Hunger Fellows. Fellowship alumni, staff, supervisors, family, and friends were on hand to recognize the hard work that these fifteen fellows have put in every day since they first came together as a class in August, 2016.

Additionally, the fellows presented the Bill Emerson Leadership Awards for Field and Policy Site Supervisor of the Year. This year’s honorees were Lauren McGowan, a four-time Emerson field site supervisor with United Way of King County, and Nora Leccese, policy site supervisor with the Presbyterian Office of Public Witness and a 21st-class Emerson Hunger Fellow alumna.

Also on hand was Congressional Hunger Center Board Chair Rep. James P. McGovern, who met with the fellows before the ceremony to congratulate them on their hard work and offer words of encouragement for their continued work on ending hunger and poverty.

After the ceremony, we asked the Emerson Fellows for their insights and takeaways from their year spent fighting hunger across the country. Here’s what they had to say:

We’re proud of the dedication they’ve shown during their term of service, and wish them all the best of luck on their next steps in discerning the path forward as they continue their work to end hunger!
