Leland Fellows are selected based on their demonstrated leadership qualities, experience, maturity, flexibility, and commitment to fighting hunger. Eligible candidates have spent time working or volunteering in a developing country and possess a relevant graduate degree or equivalent experience. Some placements may require specific skills such as foreign language fluency, a particular graduate degree or expertise, or other technical skills. Leland Fellows must be authorized to work in the United States for the full duration of the program. The procurement or extension of this authorization is the responsibility of the applicant.
The best candidates for the Leland Program are those with integrity, a positive attitude, and the flexibility to take challenging situations in stride. While CHC seeks candidates with the appropriate technical skills and background, character and commitment to food and nutrition security work play an equally significant role.

No. The fellowship is a two year program and a new class begins only after the previous class ends. The application closed on January 11, 2017. The 9th class of fellows will serve from September 2017 to August 2019. We will next begin accepting applications in the fall of 2018.
This varies widely. More important than length of time, we seek candidates who are comfortable living and working in challenging situations and have demonstrated flexibility and cross-cultural competence. In addition, candidates with one relatively lengthy of work or volunteer experience in a developing country are often more competitive than those who have undertaken a number of short term overseas assignments. Study abroad is generally not considered overseas experience for purposes of the fellowship application.
No letters of recommendation/references are required for the Leland Program application. Finalist candidates will be asked to provide contact information for two professional and/or academic references.
