Tammie Smith

17th Class, 2010-2011

Tammie is a 2010 graduate of Emory University in Atlanta, with a degree in philosophy and a minor in environmental studies. She participated in the Transforming Community Project, a university dialogue focused on human differences such as race, gender and sexuality.  She was also a member of the Ethics and Servant Leadership Forum, volunteered at a local homeless refuge and social advocacy organization, and worked with Emory’s Office of Sustainability Initiatives on sustainable community development and sustainable tobacco farming.

Field placement: Community Food Advocates

Nashville, Tennessee

Tammie developed a SNAP Advocacy Manual to identify and respond to SNAP applicants that have been wrongly declined.  Tammie also conducted research on state and federal SNAP policies and interviewed Tennessee Department of Human Services staff, administrators, SNAP recipients and applicants on ways to expand SNAP benefits to more low-income Tennesseans.

Policy placement: Feeding America

Washington, D.C.

Tammie worked to increase advocacy efforts for anti-hunger policy through Feeding America's nationwide network of food banks, community leaders and volunteers. She collaborated with Feeding America's food banks and community leaders to develop community partnerships, informational resources, and other supports for their advocacy work.
