Brock Grosso

20th Class, 2013-2014

Brock grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan in 2013 with a degree in public policy. As an undergraduate, Brock co-founded Students Organizing Against Prisons, a student-led organization focused on creating a world without prisons. As a student organizer with the Detroit Action Commonwealth, an organization of homeless and near-homeless people working for social and economic justice, he facilitated leadership development trainings and planned strategic actions. Brock was also a facilitator for the Growing Allies Anti-oppression Allyhood Development Program Retreat, where he helped participants explore anti-oppression issues and identity.

Field placement: Mississippi Center for Justice

Jackson, Mississippi

Brock engaged a diverse range of stakeholders to explore the impact of a housing trust fund in Mississippi. Together with Housing Mississippi, a statewide affordable housing advocacy coalition, he developed an outreach plan, facilitated public education events for community leaders, and helped the organization expand their membership and programming.

Policy placement: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Washington, D.C.

Brock developed recommendations on how service providers that work with children experiencing homelessness can better connect to ACF early childcare programs and vice versa. He researched and wrote a case study highlight the work done by Massachusetts and Oregon to incorporate specific interventions for children experiencing homelessness, and developed a tool to help emergency shelter operators make their facilities safer and more developmentally appropriate for young children.
