As we wrap up the 2024 Summer Seminar series, we can reflect on the wealth of knowledge we’ve gained about the root causes of hunger, the advantages of community-led solutions, and how policies shape food security. We understand the urgency of the crisis. But how can we turn this knowledge into practical change that brings us closer to a hunger-free world? Our next steps toward becoming an effective advocate lie ahead in next week’s session.
Join us Wednesday, July 24 at 11 a.m. ET as we engage with three skilled practitioners who will discuss informed advocacy—
- Mariama Badjie is currently a Research Assistant at the Congressional Research Service, and an alum of the 26th Class of Emerson National Hunger Fellows. Mariama will share tips and tricks for accessing Congress.gov and making the most of the resources available there.
- Michael Santos is Associate Director, Poverty Policy at RESULTS, and will discuss his work with policy changes related to food insecurity and poverty, along with resources he had used to inform his advocacy.
- Anina Estrem is a food justice advocate, holds a Masters in Public Policy, and has a background in management experience at a food pantry, food bank and as a USDA grant reviewer. Anina will be talking about how policy responses are often built on emotion, reaction and assumption rather than evidence, and how that impedes our capacity to have a meaningful impact. She will share ideas for changing the public perception of hunger, and subsequently impacting policy.
