Application Instructions

Applications will only be accepted via email at fellows@hungercenter.org.

Applications will only be accepted via email at fellows@hungercenter.org. Applications must consist of one MS Word document, three pages in length, with the filename as follows: Last name_first name_Middle initial.doc. The first page should be your resume, the second page essay 1, and the third page, essay 2. Attach this document to your email and send it to the Congressional Hunger Center by January 25, 2004.

Please also arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent in hard copy to the mailing address below.




Application Timeline

Sept. 2003 to Jan. 2004 - Recruitment for the Class of 2004-2005
January 25, 2004 - Applications Due
March, 2004 - Interviews with Semifinalists at regional centers or by phone
April 2004 - Notification of National Hunger Fellows Class of 2004 – 2005
Late August 2004 – 11th Class Fellows begin their service

Criteria for Selection

  • US citizen
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice
  • Creativity and initiative in problem solving
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and abilities
  • Strong commitment to alleviating hunger and poverty, as well as enthusiasm for the day to day work
  • Flexibility and the ability to adjust to new situations
  • Willingness to learn from experts in the field, while continuing to search for new models

Required Application Materials

Resume: Please be certain to include your email address. Maximum length one page.

Essay 1: What values, principles, and personal factors (social, economic, and cultural) have shaped your interest in participating in the Emerson Hunger Fellows Program? What particular abilities, qualities, knowledge, and experience will you contribute to your field and policy placements? How do you expect this fellowship to contribute to your professional goals? Maximum length is one page, single-spaced.

Essay 2: What experience have you had working for social change? What kind of leadership role did you take on during that experience? What did you learn about change and about yourself from that experience? Maximum length is one page, single-spaced.
