Photo by Elizabeth Whelan.  The government of Chile funds a nationwide school lunch program for income eligible participants.  Due to rising rates of obesity, the program emphasizes healthy eating and serves fresh fruits and vegetables daily.Based on a series of case studies, Rachel Winch, 4th class Mickey Leland International Hunger Fellow, published the report:  International Approaches to School Feeding: Country Experiences from Mali, Chile, and India.  This paper, which draws from interviews, site visits and secondary resources, explores methods, frameworks, strengths and challenges of school feeding in these three countries.

Radio interview with Damiana Astudillo, 3rd class Leland Fellow, on the impact of the new commercial cultivation of quinoa on the farmers and on the crop. Damiana worked with Bioversity International and PROINPA in the Southern Altiplano community in Bolivia. Read an article about Damiana’s work with Rolando Copa, a local mechanic and inventor, to develop a quinoa processing machine. Also, an article by Damiana on small holder technology in quinoa producing communities.

Amanda Rives Argeñal, 3rd class Fellow, developed a background paper for Christian Children’s Fund Honduras. Her paper, Food Security Foundations, addresses the history of food security in international development.

Nathaniel Heller, 3rd class, helped build and develop content for a website for the UN Food and Agricultural Organization on Bridging the Rural Digital Divide as well as an e-Agriculture website. e-Agriculture.org is a global initiative to enhance sustainable agricultural development and food security by improving the use of information, communication, and associated technologies in the sector. The overall aim is to enable members to exchange opinions, experiences, good practices and resources related to e-agriculture, and to ensure that the knowledge created is effectively shared and used worldwide.

Michael Manske, 3rd class Mickey Leland International Hunger Fellow, developed a position paper for Counterpart International on non-emergency food aid.

Sylvie Doutriaux, from the 3rd class, managed and helped to develop an assessment-tools resource base as well as a herder survey report in Mongolia while working for Mercy Corps.

Michael Johnson, 1st Class Leland International Hunger Fellow, speaks out about Being a Black Man in America. Being a Black Man is an interactive report filled with articles and photo galleries based on the findings of a survey sponsored by The Washington Post, The Kaiser Family Foundation, and Harvard University about "Being a Black Man" in America. Michael participated in the survey and in the report, you will find his thoughts along with pictures in the Photo Gallery.
