Kerri Agee


Kerri Agee

Field Placement: Catholic Relief Services, Mali

Education/Experience: Kerri Agee served as a TEFL (Teacher of English as a Foreign Language)/AIDS Peace Corps Volunteer in Cameroon from 2001-2004. Her experience as a Peace Corps volunteer greatly influenced her graduate studies and desire to work overseas in the field of maternal and child health and hygiene. Kerri recently completed a dual Master's degree in Social Work and Public Health at the University of Maryland where she focused on maternal and child health, international health, and health policy. For her M.S.W, Kerri interned in the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of Health Resources and Services Administration at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services where she worked on perinatal health issues such as nutrition and breastfeeding. Kerri is originally from Baltimore, MD and received her B.A. in Political Science and Women's Studies at the University of Pittsburgh.

Blake Audsley


Blake Audsley

Field Placement: World Food Program, Malawi

Education/Experience: Blake Audsley attended the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), where he received his Master's degree in International Relations with a specialization in development economics. While in graduate school, Blake conducted analyses of food security interventions with Save the Children in La Paz, Bolivia, and worked with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington, D.C. Before attending SAIS, Blake served as an Environmental Conservation Volunteer with the Peace Corps in Panama. As a Peace Corps volunteer, he worked primarily on agroforestry, small business development, and environmental education. Blake specifically focused his attention on the reforestation of the buffer zone of Parque Nacional Cerro Hoya in Los Santos province and on organizing community-based native tree nurseries to train low-income farmers in sustainable agriculture techniques. Blake is originally from the Colorado Front Range, and received his B.A. in Environmental Biology at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Curan Bonham


Curan Bonham

Field Placement: Bioversity International, India

Education/Experience: Prior to becoming a Fellow, Curan Bonham was a Fulbright scholar in Chile where he worked in conjunction with the University of Concepcion on a project called, Conservation of Endemic Biodiversity of the Nahuelbuta Range. Curan holds an M.S. in International Conservation and Development from the University of Montana and a B.S. in Natural Resources from Cornell University. He has worked as an agricultural extension agent in Orange County, NY and as a forestry technician in the Intermountain West for Cornell Cooperative Extension and for the U.S. Forest Service. Curan also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala where he worked on and later directed several integrated conservation development projects. Curan's primary interests lie in the preservation of agricultural biodiversity and the optimization of low input sustainable agriculture. Curan was born in Hinsdale, Illinois and now calls the Catskills of upstate New York his home.

Carlos Centeno


Carlos Centeno

Field Placement: World Food Program, Guatemala

Education/Experience: Carlos Centeno worked most recently as a consultant with the African Bureau of the United Nations Development Program in NYC and with the Center for International Conflict Resolution (CICR) at Columbia University. Carlos also worked as a consultant on the first-ever American Human Development Report and as an associate for Athgo International for Symposia at the World Bank and the UN. In 2005, he served as a volunteer with the World Food Program in Bolivia where he organized a food security census for the city of La Paz. Carlos' research interests include analyzing the correlation between environmental degradation and sustainable agriculture depletion as a catalyst for violent conflict in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Carlos also writes for several publications including Songlines Magazine, where he publishes a column on conflict, politics, and music. Carlos graduated from the University of Kansas with a B.A. in Journalism and an M.A. in International Relations, with a focus on public policy in Latin America. Born in Kansas to Venezuelan parents, he has traveled extensively in Latin America.

Lindsay Dozoretz


Lindsay Dozoretz

Field Placement: Save the Children, Mozambique

Education/Experience: Before becoming a Fellow, Lindsay Dozoretz was the Education and Marketing Coordinator/ Sustainability Lead at Seeds of Change in New Mexico where she conducted outreach and education efforts around sustainable and organic agriculture. In 2008, she completed a dual Master's degree in International Affairs, Natural Resources, and Sustainable Development at American University's School for International Service and at the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica. Prior to graduate school, Lindsay served as a Sustainable Agriculture Peace Corps Volunteer in Senegal where she worked to address local food security issues. She has also engaged in community development work in the Atlantic rainforest of Brazil, conducting a survey of medicinal plants and assisting in workshops for shade coffee production with Fazenda Iracambi. Lindsay grew up in Buffalo, New York and received her B.A. in Anthropology and English from Cornell University in 2001.

Maielle Helman


Maielle Helman

Field Placement: World Food Program, Bolivia

Education/Experience: Maielle Helman's professional experience has focused on improving basic education and maternal and child health practices in Latin America and Africa. In rural Mexico, Maielle worked as a teacher for a summer reinforcement program and later went on to work with small businesses and agricultural projects in Nicaragua. Maielle received her M.A. in International Training and Education from American University. While getting her Master's degree, Maielle contributed to teacher training and other educational initiatives at Creative Associates. At Population Services International, she worked on health interventions such as HIV/AIDS and nutrition, and then moved to Mozambique to support malaria and safe water practices. Maielle enjoys incorporating her language skills into her work and gets great satisfaction from working on projects that benefit children. She is a native New Yorker and received her B.A. in Mathematics from Northwestern University.

Erica Holzaepfel


Erica Holzaepfel

Field Placement: World Food Program, Laos

Education/Experience: Erica Ann Holzaepfel completed a dual Master's degree from Tufts University in May 2009. She received an M.A. in Law and Diplomacy from Tufts Fletcher School where she focused her studies on Human Security, Post Conflict Peace-building, and Program Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E). She also earned an M.S. in Food Policy and Applied Nutrition from the Friedman School with an emphasis on Emergency Nutrition, Livelihoods, and Food Security. Erica has held several internship positions including a post with a USAID-funded natural resource and local governance project in Tambacounda, Senegal, an M&E position with Search for Common Ground in Sierra Leone and Guinea Conakry, and a legal internship with a Guinean human rights NGO. Before graduate school, she worked as a Contracts Specialist for Associates in Rural Development, ARD, Inc. in Burlington, Vermont. Erica also served as an Americorps volunteer for the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program where she was the Family Literacy Coordinator. Erica grew up on a small island off the coast of New Hampshire and received her B.A. in Environmental Studies, Sociology, and African Studies from St. Lawrence University.

Susan Ilyin


Susan Ilyin

Field Placement: Land O'Lakes, Ethiopia

Education/Experience: Susan Ilyin most recently worked as an Emerging Market Development Adviser at the Jordan Tourism Board in Amman, Jordan where she assisted in strategic planning and improving organizational effectiveness. She also led a market research study assessing rural Rwandan consumer behavior and establishing Rwanda's first market research firm, Izuba Research S.A.R.L. Susan holds an M.S. in Social Work from Columbia University and a B.F.A from the University of Arizona. She has worked in the corporate sector executing Colgate-Palmolive Company's diversity strategy and has worked as a legal advocate in criminal court, assisting victims of domestic violence. She also spent time teaching in Chile, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica. Susan is originally from the Chicago area.

Tiffany Imes


Tiffany Imes

Field Placement: World Bank, Bangladesh

Education/Experience: Prior to the fellowship, Tiffany Imes worked as a Program Specialist in literacy, operations, and nutrition for Save the Children, USA. She holds an M.S.P.H in Parasitology from the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and a B.A. in Geography from Colgate University. While working towards her M.S.P.H., Tiffany served as a field technician in Guinea and supported research that focused on disease surveillance. After graduation, she returned to work in West Africa as a Program Coordinator for the Tulane University West Africa Research Program and the World Health Organization, focusing on building Lassa fever surveillance and laboratory diagnostic capacity in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. At the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Tiffany served as a Program Assistant where she provided logistical support and technical assistance for agricultural programming in Afghanistan. Tiffany also served as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in South Korea.

Sonia Lee


Sonia Lee

Field Placement: Action Group for Health, Human Rights, and HIV/AIDS (AGHA), Uganda

Education/Experience: Sonia Lee worked most recently as a Program Coordinator for violence prevention at Prevention Institute. A native of San Francisco, Sonia holds a M.P.H in Global Health from Yale University and a B.A. in Politics from Mount Holyoke College. Prior to completing her graduate studies in May 2007, Sonia lived and worked in Haiti for seven years. As the Director of Programs for Fonkoze, a grassroots-based, microfinance institution in Haiti, she was responsible for implementing various educational programs aimed at empowering rural women and their families through social and economic development. These programs included literacy, business skills training, and sexual and reproductive health. From 1994-97, Sonia worked for Global Exchange, a human rights organization based in San Francisco where she organized delegations to Cuba and Haiti. Sonia is fluent in Haitian Creole.

Amy Margolies


Amy Margolies

Field Placement: National Foundation for Education and Development, Brazil

Education/Experience: Amy Margolies recently received her M.A. in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University where she focused on International Negotiation/Conflict Resolution and Human Security. In 2008, as a Summer Fellow with the Harvard Project on Negotiation, she interned with the Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery at the United Nations Development Program in Guinea-Bissau, working on a youth advocacy project as well as on judicial and security sector reform. She also traveled to East Timor to conduct an evaluation of a World Bank-sponsored leadership program. Prior to graduate school, Amy spent two years in Rio de Janeiro working with the Brazilian organization, Viva Rio on community mediation centers in favelas. She is a native of Washington, D.C., is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, and received her B.A. in International Studies and Spanish at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Steven Myers


Steven Myers

Field Placement: Ikamva Labantu, South Africa

Education/Experience: Steven Myers recently completed his M.P.A. from the University of Washington where he participated in the Evans School of Public Affairs' Peace Corps Masters International program. He served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Benin as an Organizational Development Advisor to the Center for Arbitration, Mediation, and Conciliation of Benin. In 2006, Steven graduated magna cum laude from the University of Washington with a B.A in the Comparative History of Ideas. In 2004, he interned with the Department of Social Services of the Western Cape, South Africa where he conducted an evaluation of department-funded HIV/AIDS support programs. In 2005, he was awarded an international research grant from The Marc Lindenberg Center for Humanitarian Action and a Mary Gates Research scholarship to complete his undergraduate thesis, Traces of Identity: Myth and Monument in the New South Africa, which was recently published in the online journal Intersections. Prior to completing his B.A., Steven worked as an Online Marketing Manager for an insurance company in Seattle, and before that served for twelve years in the U.S. Air Force. Steven grew up in Seattle, and although he has traveled all over the world, he still calls it home.

Gabriela Prudencio


Gabriela Prudencio

Policy Placement: Mercy Corps, Washington, D.C.

Education/Experience: Gabriela Prudencio was born in Cochabamba, Bolivia where she gained an innate appreciation for the importance of food security, access to education, and health care. In her professional career, she strives to gain first-hand understanding of what works best to improve the livelihoods of low-income communities. In the field of micro-enterprise development, Gabriela worked with dairy, olive oil, cattle, pineapple, horticulture and cotton producers in Jordan, Rwanda, and Zambia, where she helped design and implement Business Development Services and Value Chain Projects. She also pioneered a Participatory Research Analysis on gender relations and economic livelihoods among women of five different ethnic groups in Zambia. Gabriela holds an M.A. in International Commerce and Policy from George Mason University and a B.A. in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia.

Jillian Waid


Jillian Waid

Field Placement: Helen Keller International, Bangladesh

Education/Experience: Jillian L. Waid recently received an M.S.W. with a concentration in Social and Economic Development from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to graduate school, she spent several years working on issues concerning South Asia. Jillian worked as a Research Assistant in Washington D.C. in the World Bank's Poverty Research Unit. She also served as a fellow for an American Indian Foundation Service Fellowship in Gujarat where she worked on reproductive health and women's livelihood issues with Kutch Mahila Vikas Sangathan. Jillian then continued working in India with the Institute of Financial Management and Research, Center for Micro Finance Research, where she managed evaluations that focused on the effectiveness of financial instruments in reducing risk for poor communities. Jillian has a B.A. in Economics and South Asian Studies from Brown University.

Emily Wei


Emily Wei

Field Placement: CARE International, Malawi

Education/Experience: Emily Wei recently graduated with an M.A. in Public Policy from Duke University and a J.D. from Fordham University in New York City. While in law school, she worked with the International Rescue Committee's International Programs Department and in the New York Resettlement Office, helping refugees and immigrants obtain citizenship. Before graduate school, Emily worked with a community development NGO in rural Ghana, and in South Africa where she worked with street children and taught business classes to women. She has also worked on remand prisoners' issues in Ghana, domestic violence in New Zealand, and housing law in New York City. Emily is originally from Houston, Texas and received her B.A. in Social Anthropology from Harvard University.
