APPLICATION INFORMATION
CLASS 2009 to 2011

The Mickey Leland International Hunger Fellows Program

The Congressional Hunger Center is currently seeking applications for the 5th Class of Leland International Hunger Fellows. The program runs from July 2009 to June 2011. The Mickey Leland Fellowship is a two-year commitment that includes a one-year field placement in a developing country and one-year placement in a policy setting, often in the headquarters of the field year organization. The fellowship endeavors to strengthen the field and policy linkages. During their policy year, fellows focus their public policy and advocacy efforts around issues they worked on directly during their field year.

The Mickey Leland International Hunger Fellows Program cultivates leadership and professional skills, provides substantial exposure to the international development and relief arenas, and provides links to a vast network of development professionals. Fellows receive a monthly stipend, health insurance, housing subsidy, and transportation and travel funds. At the end of their two-year program, Fellows earn an end-of-service stipend.

Requirements

  • Graduate degree or equivalent experience in a related field
  • At least one year of work or volunteer experience in a developing country
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and abilities, and a strong commitment to alleviating hunger and poverty
  • Flexible, strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to perform well in team and cross-cultural environments
  • US Citizen or permanent resident

Placements

Selected applicants to the 2009 to 2011 Class of Mickey Leland International Fellows Program will address food security, hunger and poverty through work that spans a variety of program areas. These areas include:

  • agriculture development
  • nutrition
  • school feeding
  • HIV/AIDS
  • climate change
  • public/private partnerships

HOW TO APPLY

Candidates must apply directly to the available fellowship placements (see list). Applications must be prepared as a single MS Word document. The document must be saved with the following filename: Fellowship Number-LastName_FirstName.doc (ex. AFR-01-Smith_Jane.doc).

The application document should include the following sections:

  • Page 1—Identification Form (download here)
  • Page 2—Cover Letter (1 page maximum length)
  • Pages 3 and 4—Resume (2 pages maximum length)
  • Pages 5 and 6—Personal Essay (2 pages maximum length)

Applicants may only apply to a maximum of two fellowship placements. A separate application document must be submitted for each application to a placement. Preferences for fellowship placements can be indicated on the Identification Form.

Cover Letter

As fellowship placements vary with respect to desired skills, experience and qualifications, the selection of candidates will be determined by who best “fits” each placement. It is recommended that applications and cover letters be tailored to match the desired fellowship. The cover letter should convey those skills, experience and qualifications that make you the best match for the fellowship placement.

Read descriptions of the various fellowship opportunities.

Personal Essay

For the personal essay, please answer the following two part question: "What do you see as the greatest contributing factors to international hunger and poverty? What has led you to engage in these issues?" Personal essays should not exceed 1000 words.

Within the context of this question, the personal essay is an opportunity to provide information about personal character, motivation, values and traits and expand more on the work and experiences listed in the resume.
