HOW TO APPLY

Candidates must apply directly to the available fellowship placements (see list). Applications must be prepared as a single MS Word document.  The document must be saved with the following filename: Fellowship Number-LastName_FirstName.doc (ex. AFR-01-Smith_Jane.doc).

The application document should include the following sections:

  • Page 1—Identification Form (download here)
  • Page 2—Cover Letter (1 page maximum length)
  • Pages 3 and 4—Resume (2 pages maximum length)
  • Pages 5 and 6—Personal Essay  (750 words maximum)

Applicants may only apply to a maximum of two fellowship placements.  A separate application document must be submitted for each application to a placement. Only one set of reference forms is necessary. Preferences for fellowship placements can be indicated on the Identification Form.

Cover Letter

As fellowship placements vary with respect to desired skills, experience and qualifications, the selection of candidates will be determined by who best “fits” each placement.  Thus, it is recommended that applications be tailored to match the desired fellowship.  The cover letter should convey those skills, experience and qualifications that make you the best match for the fellowship placement.

Personal Essay

For the personal essay, please answer the following question:  “Why do you want to be a Mickey Leland International Hunger Fellow?” Personal essays should not exceed 750 words.

Within the context of this question, the personal essay is an opportunity to provide information about personal character, motivation, values and traits and expand more on the work and experiences listed in the resume.
