LA-02: International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)

Field Site: Costa Rica
Policy Site: Washington, DC

See Web Site: http://www.ifpri.org/

IFPRI is an independent research and policy advisory agency on issues of rural poverty, food security and malnutrition. Its mission is to provide policy solutions that combat poverty and hunger, achieved through conducting high quality research that is directly relevant to major policy issues in developing countries.

The Fellow would work on a research project entitled "The Impact of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) on Agriculture and the Rural Sector in Central America". This project originated as a request from the Council of Central American Agriculture Ministers. The main objective of the research is to inform the government, private sector and general public about the likely economic and social impacts of CAFTA, particularly upon smallholder farmers. The project is also meant to identify and recommend the appropriate policy measures that can be taken to ensure that the rural poor are not left behind. During the field year, the Fellow will be based at the IFPRI office in Costa Rica (with some travel to the other countries participating in the study) focusing on market chain analysis for smallholder farmers and the impact of alternative public investment decisions. The Fellow will work in close collaboration with the local teams in each country and will have the opportunity to disseminate intermediate project results to public policy makers and other stakeholders in the region. During the policy year, the Fellow will be based in Washington, DC attached to the Markets, Trade and Investment Division. The Fellow will contribute to the final report and play a substantive role in the organization of a final dissemination workshop in Central America.

Education/Skills Required

  • MSc in Economics or Agricultural Economics.
  • Quantitative analysis skills.
  • Previous living/working experience in Central America a plus.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and statistical packages
  • Proficiency in Spanish, both orally and in writing.
  • Strong analytical and writing skills.

Other Considerations

The Fellow will be based in Costa Rica which is generally considered very comfortable and secure. Other countries in the region have higher crime rates, particularly El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras; it is not expected that the Fellow will be traveling alone to high-risk areas.
