This assignmentis a research project into the
role of underutilized local species, specifically millets
and other traditional crops, in household nutritional security
which will be carried out under the supervision of two preeminent
research institutes. MSSRF is an independent non-profit trust
founded by Professor M.S. Swaminathan following his receipt
of the World Food Prize in 1987. The mission of the institute
is to undertake research, training and policy advocacy for
sustainable poverty alleviation in India. IPGRI is the world's
largest international institute dedicated to the conservation
and use of plant genetic resources. It is one of the 15 centers
in the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research
(CGIAR).
During the field year, the Fellow will be based
in India researching the use of nutritious millets in mountainous
areas of the southwest. During the policy year, the Fellow
would complete data analysis, prepare papers for publication
and write policy briefs and write policy briefs at IPGRI headquarters
in Rome. The investigation carried out by the Fellow will
contribute towards a better understanding of the role played
by neglected and underutilized species in nutritional security
and recommend policy interventions that would create a more
conducive environment for their use in enhancing people's
livelihoods.
Education/Skills Required
- Master's degree in Nutrition, preferably with focus on
International Development.
- Previous living or working experience in Asia.
- Proficiency in MS Office and statistical packages.
- Excellent field research skills.
Other Considerations
This position may require travel to another
CGIAR institute in Aleppo, Syria. In both Syria and India,
the Fellow can be accommodated at guest houses operated by
the institutes.
