This placement focuses on access to land and
the relation that secure tenure to land has to improved incomes
for small farmers in the developing world. The placement is
collaboration between the International Land Coalition (ILC),
a global alliance of more than 40 intergovernmental and civil
society organizations that works to increase access to land
for poor households, and the Ugandan Land Alliance, a national
civil society network.
The Uganda Land Alliance (ULA) will host the
fellow for the first year. ULA is a network of NGOs that conducts
research and advocacy on land-related policy in Uganda, as
well as provides support to community-based initiatives to
protect land rights and increase land access for small farmers,
women and the landless. ULA is also spearheading regional
initiatives to strengthen a Platform for Access to Land in
East Africa, and to undertake participatory design and implementation
of rural development programs with intergovernmental agencies.
Responsibilities of the Fellow include: providing support
to ULA on its policy work through research and analysis, assist
with network-strengthening activities and facilitating communication
with the ILC Secretariat in Rome.
For the second year, the fellow will work at
the secretariat of the International Land Coalition, based
at the International Fund for Agricultural Development in
Rome. ILC supports its global membership to conduct activities
to empower local communities, identify and document local
knowledge, strengthen networks and influence national-level
policy. ILC also works as an advocate at the global level
by creating opportunities for its civil society members to
participate in UN and other international forums related to
land.
Responsibilities and duties would include, among others: drafting
policy and programming documents, research and analysis of
relevant land-related policies, documenting ILC partners'
experiences in influencing land policy, and providing support
to ILC on external communications.
Education/Skills Required
- Graduate Degree in Law, Public Policy, Agricultural /
Resource Economics, Development Studies or other relevant
field
- Previous study or work experience in East Africa is strongly
desired
- Experience related to land or natural resource policy
is a plus
- Strong written and oral communication skills, and ability
to work as part of a team
