AF-05: International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)

Field Site: Ethiopia
Policy Site: Ethiopia
See Web Site: http://www.ifpri.org/

IFPRI is an independent research and policy advisory agency on issues of rural poverty, food security and malnutrition. Its mission is to provide policy solutions that combat poverty and hunger, achieved through conducting high quality research that is directly relevant to major policy issues in developing countries. In the face of its constant food crises and dependence upon food aid, the government of Ethiopia approached IFPRI in January of 2003 to develop a country strategy support program that would provide research and knowledge to assist in the implementation of Ethiopia's rural development strategy.

The Fellow would have a unique opportunity to conduct research related to the rural development strategy of Ethiopia and to contribute to building a research and policy unit within the Government of Ethiopia. Because the Ethiopia Country Strategy Program is a policy focused program that is physically based in Ethiopia, the Fellow would be expected to spend both years of the fellowship in the country. The Fellow would be based in Addis Ababa, but spending up to half of his/her time in the field, engaged in data collection, stakeholder meetings, training or disseminating program findings.

Education/Skills Required

  • Master's Degree in Economics, Agricultural Economics, or Development Studies
  • Previous living/working experience in Africa
  • Field work and data collection experience a plus
  • MS Office and statistical packages (SPSS, STATA, SAS)

Other Considerations

The IFPRI field office is located on the campus of the International Livestock Research Institute. The Fellow would have the option of staying in furnished accommodations on the campus at a reasonable rate.
