Field Site: To Be Determined
Policy Site: Washington, DC
See Web Site: http://www.heifer.org/
Heifer International provides communities with
livestock and training to increase the incomes of rural families
and to help them develop their farms in an economically and
environmentally sustainable way. A key principle of Heifer's
methodology includes "passing of the gift", in which
all beneficiaries are expected to pass on offspring of their
livestock to another member of their community. Heifer currently
operates programs in 11 sub-Saharan African nations where
many farming communities have been devastated by the AIDS
epidemic.
The Fellow will work with Heifer International's
HIV/AIDS Advisor to develop and implement a strategy to integrate
HIV/AIDS activities into all of Heifer's field programs. The
Fellow will develop workshops and training courses for local
staff members, support the development of country-specific
strategies, and identify and develop appropriate partnerships
to support the implementation of these strategies. During
the policy year, the Fellow will focus on advocacy and policy
analysis around the HIV/AIDS crisis. Activities will include:
research on federal government policies on HIV/AIDS, identifying
funding opportunities for future projects, representing Heifer
in meetings and networks and implementing the Washington,
DC component of Heifer's HIV/AIDS advocacy program.
