Counterpart International is an international development
organization active in over 35 countries. It has recently
been awarded a grant from USAID to bolster its capacity to
fight the spread of HIV/AIDS through all of its programs and
specifically, to strengthen the links between agriculture
and nutrition in areas of high HIV/AIDS prevalence.
During the policy year, the Fellow will be assigned to Counterpart's
field office in Podor, northern Senegal, working on a new
program to integrate interventions in food security, nutrition
and HIV/AIDS. Activities of the program include: identifying
the nutritional needs of project participants, collaborating
with local partners to develop an HIV component for school
health programs, training community health workers in the
nutritional care of people living with HIV/AIDS, and conducting
research on the links between food insecurity and HIV/AIDS.
During the policy year, the Fellow will continue to work on
the relationship between HIV/AIDS and food security. While
in DC, the Fellow will have the opportunity to present research
findings, train Counterpart staff, and provide technical support
to other similar projects.
