Each year, the Congressional Hunger Center invites new and existing partners to host Emerson Fellows in the field or during their policy placements in Washington, D.C.
The program is divided into two five-month placements: from September to February, Fellows are placed in pairs across the country to work with community-based organizations in an effort to learn about and contribute to community efforts addressing hunger and poverty. The Fellows then return to Washington, D.C. for five months from March to July to work in national organizations that address hunger and poverty from a public policy or national perspective.

Emerson Hunger Fellows begin their policy placements in early March. We invite organizations to apply to be a host site in early September, with applications due in late October. National organizations working on issues related to hunger poverty are invited to apply for a Fellow by submitting project work plans to the Congressional Hunger Center. While Fellows are in their field placements, program staff share information with them information about the policy site options throughout the D.C. area. After representatives from policy placements conduct phone interviews with interested fellows, Emerson program staff collect feedback from fellows and policy organizations, and then match fellows with organizations.
