Field Placement: Northwest Harvest (Seattle, WA)
Milla worked with Northwest Harvest to engage young people as lifelong donors, advocates, and volunteers in the fight to end hunger. She conducted interviews with volunteers and established the Northwest Harvest Youth Volunteer Corps, an activities based group of young volunteers who want to get more involved. In addition she created a ten month plan for Northwest Harvest to work to better engage young people across the agency.
Hunger Free Community Report:
Why We Are Needed: Hunger Education for Hunger Relief Organizations provides a learning module and resources for educating staff and volunteers of hunger relief organizations of the larger picture of hunger in the United States beyond their agency’s work.
Policy Placement: Center for Law and Social Policy (Washington, DC)
Milla researched new initiatives of states and the federal government to address poverty. She developed issue briefs on state poverty commissions, poverty impact statements, attitudes around poverty, and the relationship between poverty and economic development.
Pre-Fellowship Education and Experience:
Originally from St. Louis, Milla graduated from Haverford College in 2010 with a degree in economics. She served as finance director of the student-run café, directed the college community service office, and played on rugby and ultimate Frisbee teams. She volunteered at an urban community garden and several organic farms, and interned at The Food Trust, where she worked on farmers’ markets, corner store initiatives, and youth education programs.
