CHC presentations on the Food as Medicine Campaign

To promote food security among people living with HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses, identify and engage leaders within the anti-hunger movement, and build collaborations among other national and community-based anti-hunger and nutrition organizations, CHC has traveled the U.S. to share news of the Food as Medicine Campaign. Global Child Nutrition Forum Annual National Conference – July 2006, Los Angeles, CAThis four-day forum provided special education sessions where international leaders in school foodservice and child nutrition exchanged program ideas and information. Ed Cooney, CHC’s executive director, addressed participants, providing information on the work of the CHC, the hunger fellowships, and the Food as Medicine Campaign.

2006 Annual Conference of America’s Second Harvest: The Nation’s Food Bank Network – September 2006, Los Angeles, CACHC’s executive director Ed Cooney provided a luncheon keynote address on food as medicine to more than 500 conference participants representing food banks, food pantries, and other anti-hunger groups from around the United States.

Bridging Borders Toward Food Security: 10th Annual Meeting of the Community Food Security Coalition - October 2006, Vancouver, BCCHC and ANSA hosted a “Food as Medicine” workshop on October 10, 2006 at the Bridging Borders conference in Vancouver, British Columbia. More than 50 workshop attendees were identified as possible educational outreach partners, and more than 900 conference attendees learned about the “Food as Medicine” campaign during the Vancouver conference. Presenters included Ed Cooney – Congressional Hunger Center (CHC), Dennis Brown– America’s Second Harvest, Sue Moen – A Loving Spoonful, Joya Parenteau, Association of Nutrition Services Agencies (ANSA) and Brigit Adamus – CHC/ANSA.

The California Child Care Food Program Roundtable’s 15th Annual CACFP Conference – October 2006, San Diego, CACHC’s Ed Cooney, a member of the CACFP National Forum board of directors, presented a plenary session on food as medicine to more than 500 conference attendees. Participants represented family child care providers, an important food as medicine audience as African American and Latino women of childbearing age represent the fastest growing population of new HIV/AIDS infections nationwide.

The 2007 National Anti-Hunger Policy Conference – February 2007, Washington, D.C.Co-sponsored by the Food Research and Action Center, America’s Second Harvest, and the National CACFP Forum, this conference brought together hundreds of advocates from the anti-hunger movement, including those representing food bank, CACFP, child care, direct service, human needs, and religious programs from across the nation. “Food as Medicine: HIV/AIDS, Chronic Illness and Nutrition Services” was offered as a workshop on February 26th, and included comment provided by Frank Abdale - Association of Nutrition Services Agencies, Marian Peele - Capital Area Food Bank (DC), Ed Cooney – Congressional Hunger Center (CHC), and Toni Holness - Boston Medical Center’s Medical Legal Partnership for Children and CHC.

Capitol Hill Forum on the Food Stamp Program – July 2007, Washington, D.C.Sponsored by the Food Research and Action Center and The Hatcher Group, this forum provided an opportunity for Capitol Hill staff to talk with advocates and others knowledgeable about the Food Stamp Program and hunger in the U.S. Two CHC staff were present to share news of the food as medicine campaign and to link campaign efforts to utilization of food stamps. Both House and Senate staff were present.

Kellogg Foundation Food & Society Fellows Program, Public Policy Meeting – October 2007, Washington, D.C.Supported by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Food & Society Policy Fellows Program hopes to catalyze cultural shifts and policy changes through innovative and creative communications toward sustainable food and farming systems that are diverse, just and health promoting. In mid-October 2007, CHC’s Ed Cooney was invited to present information on the Farm Bill and food as medicine to fellows assembled in Washington, D.C.

Colorado Anti-Hunger Network 2007 Hunger Summit Program – October 2007, Englewood, COCHC’s Ed Cooney provided a plenary discussion on food as medicine to the 120 Colorado anti-hunger leaders assembled in Englewood, including non-profit directors and staff, farmers, grocers, church leaders, school food workers, dieticians, foundation representatives, and policy makers.
