“When Medicine Isn’t Enough: The Benefits of Providing Nutrition Support to People Living with Life-Challenging Illnesses” was researched and developed by Emerson hunger fellow Nikita Barai during her time with Food & Friends. Food & Friends addresses the challenges of malnutrition and food insecurity among the critically ill in the Washington, D.C. region by providing home-delivered meals, nutrition counseling and support. This pilot study was designed to demonstrate the positive impact of nutrition support on managing disease, improving health, and enhancing quality of life. A series of home visits with a small group of clients during their first three months on meal delivery services revealed findings related to health and symptom management, food intake and knowledge of nutrition, and weight stabilization and body composition analysis.
